The Lowest Animal.
"Americans have always had a high regard for progress and self-improvement. Mark Twain couples this admirable national trait with a blistering vision of how far, in his opinion, the human race falls short of its ideals. Think about what you would like to change about human nature, and freewrite your ideas" (Holt 468)

As humans, we have come very far, from the way things originally had been. Slavery for instance, thankfully, is no longer a part of our world. People have a freedom of religion. Of speech.
But then again, those things are our rights, we should not be necessarly extremely thankful to have them. We were supposed to have those rights from the very beginning. I guess its because despite the fact that those are indeed rights and not mere privledges, many people didn't exactly see it that way. It is dissapointing that anyone could really feel that way. Superiority? We've always been equal. We're all humans aren't we. Perhaps its because in other parts of the world, people's rights are actually taken from them. So we should indeed be grateful that we don't live in such places. However, we should also be dissapointed to such a high extent, that the world isn't the way its supposed to be. That people are actually so cruel, that they feel they have the right to take away other people's rights. It shows that despite how far we have indeed come, there is so much more that still needs to happen. The only way we can do that, is if we all forget about small differences, and look at the similarites.
And there's alot of those.
